Guest Blog: How To Look Good in a Humid Climate

Today’s guest blogger is stranded in Bali, leaving her with plenty of time to talk humidy, frizz and how to keep it all in check. Please welcome Emma Cannell, who, when not stranded in far away lands, blogs at Older Is The New Black and enjoys a fairly humidity-free life here in Australia. Enjoy!

I am currently in Bali – the “Land of the Gods”. It also seems that I might be here for an indefinite period if the ash cloud has anything to do with it.

I’m also the person who has everything working against them when it comes to humid grooming. I have curly, frizzy hair; I get hot and I sweat.

But, after 20 visits to Bali I have learnt a few tricks to surviving Bali with a teeny tiny bit of style.

TIP 1. Day Hair

There’s only one choice – drench your hair in conditioner and slick it back into a bun, plait or a low ponytail, or spray it with some dry shampoo and pop it in a messy bun. Spritz it with a bit of hairspray and forget.

TIP 2. Day Face

One word: Sunblock. The best is the strongest. I like Invisible Zinc. And don’t even bother with foundation (okay, BB or CC cream if you must). Waterproof mascara will define those lashes and is great for day, and lip balm will add some shine. Try one with some SPF. Mecca do a great one with a slight tint.

TIP 3. Day Body

Get a good deodorant like Rexona Clinical Protection. You will not sweat, I promise. Remember a deodorant hinders the smell, while antiperspirant will stop the sweat. Combine the two and you are covered. Also if you’re a victim of a bit of chaffing some nappy rash cream and talc will sort it out. Of course sunblock and mosquito repellent is a must even in the middle of the day.

TIP 4. Night Face

I forgo foundation and pop on concealer under my eyes and in any spot that need covering. Next YSL Touch Eclat under my eyes and under my brows (to highlight and brighten). I also put on some bronzer- I am using Nars The Multiple at the moment. You can also use it to do a bit of contouring. I pop on some mascara I am currently using Benefit They’re Real, and give my face a little lift with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder.

Lips work whether you’re going bright or natural. For a natural finish, line and fill in the whole lip with a natural liner before applying your lipstick – Soar by MAC is great, while MAC Ruby Woo is my pick for bright red. If it’s pink you’re after, I love Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Yu or Revlon Color Burst Stain in Smitten. Brights are great because they brighten the face and make you look healthy.

TIP 5. Night Hair

See day hair, grab a frangipani and tuck it in your hair.

TIP 6. Night Body

Mosquito spray and a really good moisturiser will enhance that golden glowing tan that was achieved by safe sunning.

Finally more mosquito spray and don’t forget a good probiotic every day to keep the Bali Belly away.

Have you been to Bali?

How do you deal with the humidity?

Do you think I’ll ever get out of here?
